It is inevitable that early peoples were present in the Outer Hebrides in early prehistoric times, but all evidence of them has been swept away during successive Ice Ages, when ice sheets and glaciers scoured deep into the bedrock.
The smoothed and scoured rock surfaces left by the ice can be seen throughout the Islands.
